Today I took a ferry to visit Ellis Island. It was not my first time doing so, but it had not really had much meaning to me as a 6 year old girl. The thought in my head was probably "Whoa that huge green lady on the island over there is ace!" But this time, after discovering that my own ancestors came to Ellis Island in the early 1900's as immigrants to the U.S., well that just made it so much more "Ace". On the ferry to Ellis Island, I tried to picture my great-great-grandmother, over a century ago, coming to this same place for the first time. "That's America!" she would say happily. She would stand at the ship's railing with her brother and point to the green strip of land seen beyond the waves. Overhead the masts would creak in the wind. "I can't wait to walk on land again," she would think and shiver. She would clutch her doll close to her chest and whisper to her. "Soon we'll be on land again," she would whisper. "Don't worry about the wind." 

"What's the first thing you want to do in America?" her brother would ask.
"I want to pick an apple," she would say dreamily. "There are apples everywhere in America." 
"Apples!" he would reply. "We'll pick cherries too!" 
At this point in my daydream, the ferry stopped and we lined up to exit. As for the building, it was amazing. Everything about it. The architecture, the fresh paint and sea air smell, the history....it was awe inspiring. It is cold, and quiet. It feels like the ghost of your past is dropping by for a visit...In a good way. It might not have been cold, it could have just been a hair raising experience. 
I would have visited the Statue of Liberty today too, but the national park isn't open long enough to visit both Ellis and Liberty. At least that's what they told me there. Yes, that's right, they are both national parks. Ta-ta for now...I'm tired, I'm getting used to Eastern Time. Yes, it makes me practically a new yorker. Can you say "New Yoke?"

Sweet Tooth

Today I had the opportunity to go to Dylan’s Candy Bar. For those of you who are unaware, Dylan’s Candy Bar is run by designer Ralph Lauren’s daughter Dylan Lauren and the store is considered the closest thing to Willy Wonka in real life. The store features all different types of candy and is meant to appeal to any candy lover. I’ve heard so much about this place and was really excited to finally get to see it with my own eyes.

The exterior blends right into the scene on the corner of 60th and Third Avenue. Its large windows only hint of what is inside and is decorated with headless models wearing the logo tee shirts and gift baskets bursting with colorful candy.
The first thing that I noticed when I stepped inside is the smell. Oh, what a wonderful smell! Made  up of all things sweet, it’s chocolatey and buttery, welcoming you inside. My attention was then drawn to the giant area devoted to bin candy. Gummies, taffy, lollipops, chocolates of all shapes, colors and sizes; both familiar and not, were there to represent themselves and to tempt you. Boxes of candy were placed amongst the bins, reminding you there is still more to come. 
Working my way towards the back, I found that Dylan’s has a ice cream bar with a giant floor to ceiling picture display of their offerings. If that wasn’t enough, there was also a small display case off to the side filled with cupcakes and other treats. 
From there I noticed the stair case that led into the lower level of the store. It was lit up so that you could see all the bits of candy that were decorated into the steps. I was following the candy brick road down into the candy city, in a way.
This level had so much more to offer than the first floor. There was a whole corner devoted to retro candy with Idaho Spud, Skybar, Clark Bar, and Charleston Chew among many others, all waiting to waken some long forgotten childhood memory.
On the other side there were the self-dispensing bins of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans and the M&M Colorworks bins as well. 
Along the back wall there was a huge display of PEZ candies and dispensers for sale. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many all in one place. The other half of the wall was devoted to Dylan’s own line of Belgian chocolates. There was a whole display dedicated to Celebrity candies. It was interesting to read though the names and see what their favorite candy was.
To makes things even more surreal, The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup character mascot was walking around!

And they didn't only have candy. They had Jelly Belly Lollipops, the Jelly Belly Cologne as well as the Big Tips Candy Collection.Then there was the fashion section...Clothes with the Dylan’s candy bar logo on everything from baby bibs, t-shirts, tank tops, pajamas and sweat pants. It wasn’t just clothing either; candy pillows, plush toys, perfumes, body washes, makeup, lip-gloss….the list goes on. Candy, ice-cream, cupcakes, and clothes all in one place....It can't get any better than that!

Jet Lagged

No...I don't really have severe jet lag yet. My flight was on time but we didn't land at JFK until around 7:30 pm EST. Flying doesn't make me tired, and I wanted to get started on my trip on the first day! It took an hour for the car to come, and to get to my hotel and checked in...faster than usual. I took a bubble bath, and had dinner at the Peninsula's restaurant, Fives. I ordered the Hoisin Glazed Duck Breast, which had a duck confit spring roll, bok choy, and charred mango. And a cosmopolitan...delish!  I'll update you tomorrow after I actually have interesting adventures in New York.

Time

One of my greatest vices.

Whenever I have free time, I first do all of my "guilty things", and then blog. I've already bought celebrity Tabloids: People, US Weekly, Star etc.; bought a Tab Energy Drink; made an appointment to get my hair done; and gobbled up a bag of swedish fish (I have another one for the plane :-). Now, I'm on a computer in the San Francisco Airport, waiting for 9:30 (The time my flight leaves) to come and doing what else...but blogging. It is 8:45 and I don't leave for 45 minutes. I quickly made it through securities and did curbside luggage check. Now, I have this empty time. I almost never have a space in my day like this. With the kids, and my husband, and everything else going on, it seems that there is something assigned to every second of my days. Time like this should be nirvana...but it makes me nervous since I'm not used to it. Okay, now I'm off to my Blair Time. I'll write more tonight after I arrive in New York. Bye!

New York, New York

I'm off to the big apple tomorrow! I've pulled out my LV Pegase 70 and  KeepAll 60, and have thrown three-fourths of my closet onto my bed. My flight leaves tomorrow at 9:30, so I have to get to the airport by 8. It's not too early...I've had worse. I'll be staying in The Peninsula on Fifth Avenue. I''ll be writing at least one post each day of my trip, just to give you guys an update. Goodbye California....Hello New York! Now I should go finish packing...

The excitement!

I will be taking a trip to New York City alone in a couple weeks. The kids will stay with their father, and a nanny during the day. This will be my first time in a few years traveling to the Big Apple without the kids and I am excited to have a chance to do some of my favorite big girl things there. I will continue writing during my trip. Now this is really something to look forward too!
